10 Tips to Maximize CTR

In my previous post about CTR, I have provided three methods for improving your CTR. They are crucial, especially when you want to earn more money from Google Adsense. Just like what I did for the part "Driving Traffic", I will try to generalize and give you ten brief tips that enable you to have a quick scan on this post within ten minutes and at the same time, have in-depth knowledge in boosting CTR. Enjoy!

1) The most important factor is about the placement of ads. Even if you have used the highest-paid ads, you won't earn more unless your visitors click on them. From my experience, the best place to see the ad is the top of your web page and the next is aside your document's text (just like the right colum of my blog). Visitors will click it more frequently since it will look like your text.

2) You should try to make your ads look as a part of your web page. In other words, it is a matter of blending or amflaouge. An ad should not stand out as an ad. Visitors are not positive to online advertising and become "blind" to ads as time goes on. (For avoidind ads blindness, please visit: http://www.dagsensecodes.com/2006/11/avoiding-ads-blindness.html). They search the internet for content not ads. Especially for Banners - they have a less of 0.5% response. Imagine if you have an Adsense ad looking like the typical Banner with different colors. It will not be profitable. So, don't have any high contrast between your ads and your content text.

3) Another observation from my adsense experience is that, text ads are better than image ads. Like what I said in the previous point, people are more responsive to text than images. In a way it is considered as a part of the content text and is more clickable.

4) No Border ads. One of the best tricks is to erase the borders of Adsense ads and make them, again, having the same color with your website's background.

5) No ads other than Google Adsense ads. Being legitimate according to Google's TOS is one reason and the second more practical reason is that you do not want to distract your visitor's attention and go somewhere else without clicking your Adsense ads.

6) Traffic. Try to use legitimate ways of traffic. Some people use Google Adwords and other Pay-per-click search engines. The problem here is to search very carefully for the right niche and keywords in order to make your campaigns profitable. Other ways are link popularity techniques like directories, software or even mass blog submission techniques. Remember, never join those link farms, because that will downgrade your PR and search engine's algorithms are so clever that they will even ban your listings.

7) Do not rely on one website. If it is possible, try to make as many websites that contain different contents as possible. Think abut it, if you have 10 websites and every website of your own can only make 1 bucks per day on average, then you can already have an avergae income of 10 bucks per day. Does it sound good?

8) Content is King. I am sure you have heard about it. It is a joke if you still do not realize the importance of content. Articles are one of the best tactics to create huge websites that will be crawled by search engine's robots. Don't forget search engines exist to provide relevant content at first.

9) Submit your sites with various site maps. Google's site maps visit your site and crawl it much sooner that any other submission process. You can submit your brand-new site at: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps . The same rule applies to other sitemaps, like Yahoo!

10) Relevant ads. It's one of the most important factors for Adsense success. If the internet user can't find a relevant ad in your page, he or she won't click the ad. So it's important to create relevant resource for your web page. Contact Google whenever you do not have targeted and relevant ads in your site(s).

Your site is quite good, in term of blending the ads. Those two referral buttons are quite weired of its setting. Better move to another place.

You can also try to have a link unit right below your heading of "Click the picture of the PS3 above to go to our products page."

See whether these suggestions can help you.

Thank you very much for leaving me a comment. If you find the site is useful to you, please subscribe my blog and kindly put a link to me site?

P.S. sorry for the late reply

al,

It is my pleasure to help you. Well, in your site, there are several improvements I can think of.

First, the width of your serach box is too long that extend over the boundary and make it a bit odd. Try to lower the number of characters of the search box during customizing it.

Second, for the referral buttons and the skyscraper, they should exchange their positions. By moving the skyscraper to the top, visitor can easily get impressions on it and are more likely to click on them.

Third, change the color of the link of your ads from black to green. That green color should be the same as the one used in the heading of posts.

Always use the channels to see the result before and after the changes.

Finally, I hope you can put a link to my site in your blog, and that will help more newcomers in Adsense.

Hi,
Firstly, thanks for the tips and info, they're a great help!
You have left some helpful advice for others on the blog and hoped you might have a look at one of my pages and give me some advice on ad placement or blending. I'm getting between 50 and 200 unique visitors a day but only the odd click-through every other day on my ads.

Your input would be very welcome.

John,

Your layout is quite good. What is lacking is the content. There is actually no real content for reader to read. In term of ad to content ratio, you have a very high ratio of that. This will kind of make your visitors away.

Since your layout is v. good, you only need to add more content to it. Hope it helps.

You are welcome to ask me any question on Adsense. Please also put a link in your blog to my site as a little reward and motivation. Thanks.

Eugene,

Thank you very much for your comment.

After a quick scan of your site, I think you should remove the link unit and change it in to a vertical format and put it into the links on the left.

Then, you can also relocate the leaderboard to the site and I believe more earning can be recieved from it.

I just discovered your site, very good, nicely laid out, thank you for taking the time to set it up and share your knowledge.

I have two questions:

[1] You mentioned not having any other ads other than Adsense - this being a violation of Google TOS. Other than it being a distraction to people who might click on your Adsense ads, why? I don't see this restriction in the TOS. I set up some Bravenet ads on my site (they pay $1 to attract people).

[2] Your Amazon book graphics are nice, small, petit, whereas mine are large. How did you get these smaller ones?

Best regards,
Susan (fiddlesticks)

Susan,

Thank you very much for your kind comment. Your comment is always my motivation to share more of what I know about Adsense.

For your first question, it is a bit of my mistakes. Two months ago, Google's TOS has been changed that it allows other contextually-targeted ad networks to appear on the same page with Google. You can do so right now. But I still recomment not to do so. Google adsense is the best paying ad company in the world at the moment, why use other ad networks that give you less revenue?

For the second question, it is all about the setting inside your amazon associate account. I am using Omasakes something. Please continue to ask me if you still do not know how to set up.

P.S. please provide a link to us in order to help more adsense newbies.

Thanks for your reply.

I think I'll ditch the Bravenet stuff I put up on my website - it's gaudy and not at all what I thought they'd be.

I just read on Amazon that they should be allowed by Google TOS, and to notify them if this is not the case.

As for the Amazon links, I did use Omakase as a bottom banner, I see that one can customize it more, so I'll play a bit with that. I'm still using direct links in my posts, so I guess I'm stuck with the big box versions there.

As for links in my blog, I am still setting things up, will consider this when I'm further along (I'm only 2.5 days old in Blogger world).

Thanks again,
Susan (aka fiddlesticks)

You have a nice site, ganesh. You have much and updated content. However there are some thing to improve.
1. You should not show all the text in the posts. This will make the webpage super long, and scare away your visitors.

2. Your ads are not blended with the background at all. Try to refer to my post on the blending of ads, so as to increase CTR.

Hi ,

I have been regularly visiting your site .it does provide very usefull tips .

I just started a website

www.shumaonline.com it is 3 month old . I have placed certain adsense advt . But performance is not good it could be two reasons poor trafficand adsense placement .

Please advise some improvement

Hi subodh,

Thanks for your comment and question. For the traffic part, you can refer to my section that specifically talk about how to drive traffic to your site.

I agree that there are problems with the ad placement, as well as other content. To me, it is a bit messy, and it is hard for reader to read. It seems to me that the site is not yet completed. The width of the page is too wide, and is stretching the images. Also, try not to use grey search box on top. I suggest you to use white instead.

One more thing, never used more than 3 colors for the font and do not make the font size so differnet (Some fonts is really big)

I hope it helps, and please put a backlink to us to help more Gsense newbies

Hi yytan,

thanks for your question. First of all, your ads do not blend with the background and hence make the CTR is a bit lower than what you deserved. For the leaderboard ad, you should use the color of "bdcfad"; while for the skyscraper ad, you should use the color of "9cba52".

For the traffic, you can refer to my posts on how to drive traffic. My suggestion is you should put more content as well as images to your site, and that will make your site looks richer in content.

Please put a backlink to my site as a reward.

I suggest you can put a link unit underneath the leaderboard as well.
