Ways that Google detects Invalid clicks
We always hear that Google has a sophisticated system to detect the invalid clicks, and result in termination of the cheaters' account. But, how can Google do that? In this post, I summarize those ways that Google depends on to detect whether the clicks on your site are invalid or not. Google will not first ban your account immediately. Rather, they will first flag your account and Google will keep a closer eye to your account. In some occasion, they may send you a warning letter to notify your situation; but sometimes not.
1. IP Address
It is the easist and must be recognized by everyone. If those clicks on your ads are originated from the same IP Address as the one used for accessing your AdSense account, your account is flagged.
2. Click Through Rate (CTR)
Normally, Click thru Rate should not excees 10%. Otherwise, Google will flag your account. For your information, normal CTR should ranges from 0.5% - 10%.
3. Physical Location
Google has good tracing software and technology. They can trace traffics origin down to the small town. So, using different computers with different IP address does not secure anything. So, don't try to click your ads in various internet cafes. That will kill you.
4. Cookies
Most home users do not use static IP Address for Internet connection. In most cases just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don't forget, Google has set cookies on your computer. They can trace these cookies and see whether they originate from the same computer.
5. Click Pattern 1
It is also suspicious when people click on their clicks and then run away immediately (hit-and-run). But normally, people will surf for a while inside your pages and then click on the ads they want.
6. Click Pattern 2
why this computer / IP address / person is so trigger-click-happy on this particular website but never click on the ads on other sites?
7. Click Pattern 3
And why is it that people accessing these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?
8.Other Google Services
Apart from Google Adsense, Google also provide a series of services to us. Don't just think that it is safe if you do not log in your adsense account and click on your ads. What other Google services do they provide to us? Here are some: Gmail (most poeple are using it), Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, or even Youtube (coz Google has just recently acquired it).
9. Search Engine Ranking
Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? How come people can access your website and click your ads? That will make Google to smell a rat.
10. Webpage design
How about the "Please click a link below" or "donate us by clicking the ads"? These kinds of encouragement is not in line with Google's TOS. Google can use their winning search engine, or even human eyes to check your sites from time to time.
11. Advertisers conversion rate
Ad click is one thing. But does it bring value to the advertisers? If none of the clicks on your site translate to conversion to the advertiser, you are in trouble. First the Smart-Pricing hits, then your AdSense account disabled.

if you are disabled for invalid clicks, what are the chances for google to re-instate your account...if you try to appeal?
thanx
If you have been banned by Google unluckily, you have little chance to reapply for adsense again for the same site with same content inside.
For higher chance, you may choose to grab and write similar but different content from your original one, or even have totally different content for your site, and then reapply again!
I heard that chance will be higher in this case.
Also, you are cordially invited to subscribe for my blog to get updated news and information. Stay tune!
thnx adsense decoder.
so what you're saying is that the issue here are the invalid clicks made on specific site? in other words, you're saying THE SITE IS BANNED and NOT THE OWNER?
that said, if I make a new site with a totally different content, they don't mind that this totally different site is made by a creator who is previously banned?
again, thanks.
yes.....but of course I cannot gurantee you about that, coz I am not a adsense insider.
But I think you should try, with the use of a brand new email address and apply again. btw, I have just recently typed a post about re-applying issue after getting banned. You are recommended to have a look on that.
Also, please kindly leave your email address and subscribe for this blog, in order to keep in touch with my latest adsense news.
What if there is alot of local buzz and people close to where you live/post to your website click on the ads on your website, would you get banned for that even though you never clicked it by yourself?
visit my blog at: http://itsongoogle.blogspot.com
Physical Location is just only one way....Google will take a holistic look on the combined result. So, that wouldn't make you getting banned.
By the way, you blog looks good! Hope you can subscribe my blog for updated news.
Hello,
i know that showing pages with google ads in Manualsurf or Autosurf
programs is forbidden! So here is my question:
Can i show in Manualsurf and Autosurf program a so called "Filter Page"?
It is page that belongs to the same domain, but it has not any google
ads! This page contains a link to the webpage that contens google ads.
I have made an example, please check it and tell me dues it a google
rules violitation or not!
Example: the webpage http://www.freegames.e-webas.net/freegames.html
has a link to the page with google ads.
http://www.freegames.e-webas.net/
Will such clicks be valid for google or not?
Thanks
Hi there. Thank you very much in leaving a comment in my site.
I think you can do so without any violation of Google's TOS. However, even if it is allowed, I don't think it is a good way to build up traffic to a site.
Please refer to my post of "10 tips on building traffic". There are more free methods to promote your site.

Hello,
i have one more question!
What should i do when i see that someone make invalid clicks (maybe specially)??
I don't know who, but i think that someone's want to take revenge. For example: today he has clicked 12 times on the same ad! The overall pageCTR(for this page) has grown today to 13,19%.
Thanks for help!
It is the most troublesome problem to any Adsensers. But are you sure he/she wants to revenge? Because 12 clicks is acceptable to me and a CTR of 13.19% is also reasonable. Since this CTR only last for a day, I suggest you can closely oberve the report and see whether this situation will continue.
If you really want to report it to Google, it is okay to do so. Please visit my post "Reporting invalid / sabotage clicks to Google" for your reference
hey dear ...All the point for the answer to the Question that how google will detect invalid clicking are correct Except no.10
that says hardware address, which is MAC address..it is Localy significant so i dont think that Google can find Hardware or MAC address of ur computer and can detect if the Perticular clicking is from the same computer however, google can definatly very easily find out IPADDRESS of ur computer and location of IPADDRESS.
Thank you very much for your information. I have now corrected the corresponding part.
hi decoder !
i'm so glad reading ur blog :d
what a very clear explaination.
i have a question bout the banning.
before i read ur blog, i used to click and open my web page by my self.
i can still log on to my adsense account. no flagging message from google adsense admin. but, my earning report in a month is always 0.
i'm afraid if this means that i'm already banned/disabled ???
thnk u 4 ur answer.
good luck.
You used to click and open your webpage? Do you mean you use to click your own ads? If yes, don't do that again! That will cause Google to ban your adsense account.
No matter what, if you can still login your account, that mean your account has not been disabled yet. You mentioned that your earning is always zero. What about the clicks? How many clicks did you recieve?
Look forward for your reply
Hello Joe,
i think that this question is not only for me very interesting.
In internet exists very much websites with content that google not allows (exmpl: wares, alcohol, drogs....).
Question: can i put links to my website from such verbidden websites?
Pavlidze,
I understand now. If your site is clean from forbidden content, there will be no problem for you to have adsense ads on that page, EVEN if you have links to the forbidden sites.

-----------------------------
thank you for your reply. then i will reply back,
about the clicks, actually, it is not earning zero for all the time,
i can realize that i still need more publication/promotion for my site.
My site, as can be seen, is not viewing contents in English only, just partial of those are written in English. What do you think of that ?
Thnk U, and have a nice day.
szpilman
szpilman,
Thank you very much for your comment. About your site, I think its layout is generally okay. Since I do not know what language it is, it is hard for me to make any comment. For the search box in the center, why don't you change to white in color?
I hope you can kindly put a link to my blog from your site as a little motivation.

if only i can contact you personally ? how is it possible ?
nice to know you :D
This question has been answered before. Please refer to the previous answer for that.
szpilman,
You can send me an email at poshswinger@gmail.com to ask questions on Adsnese.
P.S. Thank you very much for leaving me a link.
Well, I have just tried to search via your google search box and it says you have been banned. It just goes to show that we are all hanging on a very thin thread indeed. Hope it all goes well with you anyway, good luck mate.
So what if people go to your site and try to get your account banned by repetitively clicking on the ads and making it look like you are trying to get increased revenue? Couldn't that easily get your account banned?
Thank you very much for your question. That's a pretty common question in Adsense. I admit that this kind of things are unavoidable, and I cannot sit here comfortably and expect income will come easily.
I need to check the Adsense account frequently, and see if there are invalid clicks that you are talking about. If yes, the only thing you need to do is to report the invalid clicks to Google immediately.
For more information, please visit:

P.S. Hope you can subscribe my blog and give a lin to my site.
I really don't know how to know about invalid clicks on my sites on my own.
I use google analytics and what you call that...addfreestats. but i don't know where the clicks done and on how many visits....
Isn't it too late to wait the google adsense to inform me about invalid clicks?
However, sometimes when I see very low page impression and comparably high number of clicks, I inform Adsense team.
Vahsek's Ramblings!
The simplest way will be to monitor your adsense aaccount. The impression, clicks and CTR should be more or less the same in average. If you find one day, there is a surge on the number of clicks (or CTR), you should be alert on that and report that to Google. That's the sabotage clicks.
For information on how to report, please refer to the relevant post in my blog.
Hello, I'm remodeling my site into a directory on my current sent. As of now since I'm trying to find broken links and such and I'm the only one that knows about it, my CPMs are done to 0%. Makes sense to me. But once I publish my site to the public, will those percents go back up or is my account dead and do I need to reapply? Thanks.
Joffroi,
Of course your CTR will go up again, once you published the site. You do not need to apply for another adsense account for that too.
P.S. please provide a backlink to our new site.
please help me
I created my google adsense account in my blog from my college library.
and i said to my friends to visit my blog.
If they click on my ads from the same library. wat will happen. can i get money for that clicks?
please help me
sujith,
sorry for the belated reply. You need to be careful with. If there are many students visiting your site and click the ads there. There is a risk that Google will treat those as invalid clicks. Not crediting thtose invalid clicks is one thingg, disabling of your account is quite another.
Hope it helps.
Hi
very informative
i have been online since 2 years and had a website which got banned in 3 months, then restarted the whole building and optimisation process, now have a website at http://www.sristysaviation.com with reasonable traffic of close to 300 pageviews a day and get a ctr of 2 to 9 percent varying everyday. It suddenly increases close to 10% when i issue my aviation newsletter to all the subscribers. Will this pose a problem since my ctr will definitely increase when my subscriber list of 120 right now increases to 500 or plus. What to do then. Also kindly let me know whether i am ok with my ad plcements at http://www.sristysaviation.com/lib/subscribe.htm - hope not violating any TOS
Great, i have bookmarked you for the future
Thanks
Thank you very much for leaving a comment and question here.
After reading your situation, I don't think it will pose a problem to you. Issuing newsletter is a good way to keep visitors and has nothing violating with Google's policies. At the same time, 10% is a excellent CTR and will not alert Google at the moment.
It's great to hear you can get a 10% CTR! Good job!
Hope you can put a backlink to my blog in order to help more adsense newbies.
Hi
nice tips I red here!
My question is
I see your google ads on the left top of your site you have get rid of the label Ads by google how did you manage to do that is it not forbidden?
thanks
Thanks for your comment.
I am currently testing a medium-term viability of other Adsense alternatives. And the one you are talking about is Bidvertiser. It is also a CPC ad network, and funstions like Adsense. Since its ad looks very similar to Adsense ads, they cannot be toegther on the same page.
Please kindly put a backlink to my blog to help more adsense newbies.
plse help i dont know how my ctr became 442 % , will my site get banned
You need to report this to Google immediately! Go and refer to my relevant post titled as "Report invalid clicks to Google"
442% is shocking.
You are doing a good job and your site is so informative.I am a new blogger Please look at my site and give me your comments and recommendations.

Hi nabs,
It really is. Hope that would not happen to all of us. If you find that high CTR, you need to report to Google immediately, in order to secure your account.
Hi Samueli,
Thanks for your comment. I appreciate that a lot.
For your blog, I can give several comments. First, you need to have far more content. Only three posts are not enough to attract visitors to come. Second, the skyscraper on the left is not blend with the background. Try to use the same color as your site background. Third, you can put more adsense ads to your site. Two skysrapers are not enough to earn.
If you want to have more detailed advices, please put a back link to my site.
I am a newbie. How do I put a back link to your site.Pls confirm also whether truly one can generate a handsome revenue from google adsense.
Hi Samueli,
Please go to http://www.dagsensecodes.com/link.html , and then copy the HTML and paste it back to the template of your blog.
Yes, I earn more or less $500 a month, and indeed, many many bloggers earn more than this amount. You can be one of them.
Look forward to your backlink. Thanks.
I have pasted the backlink. What will happen next?I will like to place the google search and amazon book ad on my site.
i have put a baclink to your site. It is conspicous on my site and it has a heading- hint to bloggers just above my google ads.
Pls give me all the advise that will make me earn from my blog.
My e mail is woliisamueli@gmail.com
Hi samueli,
Thanks for your link, and I am really appreciate that. Let me give you some preliminary suggestions.
First, try to put a nice and matching banner image (not ad!) on the top, and that will make your blog looks far more attractive and professional.
Second, try to use the wide skyscraper ads instead of skyscrpaer ads, coz that will give you a higher CTR.
Third, use the hex color "FCF3D6" to be the background color of your ad, instead of "956839". That will blend the ad with the background totally. Again, it is a way to increase CTR.
Fourth, instead of using three skyscraper ads, try to place one leaderboard on top underneath the banner image I suggested before. Also, implement a button ad into the post like the one in my blog. You can refer to my blog for further information on how to insert an ad into a post.
Fifth, your blog is clearly not optimized for SEO. Why don't you optimze it in order to get a higher ranking in Google and Yahoo?
Hope these help. In fact, you site looks good and you are blogging in a niche topic. All these are the basic foundations to be a profitable Adsensers. I am sure you have the potential to earn at least $100 a month.
Also, sorry for my ignorance of your last comment.
hi, thanks for your information about the adsense.
now, 0.5% to 10% is in 1 day or all time?
www.zerodevice.net
Hi zerodevice,
Thanks for your comment.
Well, for that range of CTR between 0.5% to 10%, you should always keep it from time to time, since Google will flag your site once you have repeated cross 10% CTR.
Please put a backlink to help more Adsense newbies.
thanks. will try all these and see how it goes...
You are welcome, Samueli.
Feel free to ask me at anytime.
Anyone knows what happens someone goes to my website and keep clicking the ads? Will my account be banned?
Hi,
You shouldn't be panic with that. Google has a good tracking system to track invalid clicks and sabotage clicks. You should check with your sitemeter and Adsense account, and report to Google once you see there is a suspicious click pattern.
once in google adsense forom u have said that there is no problem if ctr is high but in your site u have said that if ctr is more tan 10 then there is danger of banning.
Hi,
What I mean is 8%-9% is already a high CTR, and do not have any threat. On the other hand, once you cross the 10% threshold, Google will flag your site, and keep close monitoring. If you site do recieve organic impressions and clicks, there is no need to care that flag, since none of them are invalid.
Hi,
Glad to see people like u doing good job like providing such information.
I would like to know from for my new blog. I am a new blogger and have put adsense ads on it. Please have a look at my blog and let me know your feedback about it.
Basically ad placement, ad type, blog content and what else u feel I should do to increase the traffic.
http://web-inf.blogspot.com/
Please tell me how can I increase pageviews per day and earn more from it.
Thank you for your work.
how to prevent someone from continuous clicking on ads?is there any script to ban those?
how to find out when my CTR crosses 10% ?is there any problem if my no. of impressions becomes nearly equal to no. of clicks ?
if it does then how to notify google?
how can we get our blog optimized for SEO ?
my website page rank is not good as it is newly made, but i am publicizing it through orkut communities and forums, and from there i am getting about 50 visitors per day..it may rise. if it rises then will it raise any alarm in google?
for your information my account was once banned because of invalid clicks plzz explain all the above questions in simple way as i am a newbie
Hi Deadly Devil,
I am sorry that there is no tools to kep away people from sabotage clicks. You should monitor your stats closely and report to Google once you find any suspicious click patterns.
Hi Sachin,
Thanks for your comment. If you want to know the tips for getting more traffic to your site and earn more, please refer to my earlier posts on traffic.
