What is Adsense Channel?

After you logging into your Adsense account, you may wonder what a channel is for the first few times. I specifically write this post in order to let you know what is a channel, what is the use of it, how to maximize the potential of it. Stay tune!

There are two types of channels, one is URL channel, and the other is custom channel. There are some differences between two of them. But before going into that detail, I would like to explain more what is the function of it.

Channel can be assigned according to your preference during the generation of Adsense HMTL code. It is used to monitor the performance of an ad unit, or the set of ads units under a particular URL. As I have mentioned before in the previous posts, you need to adjust and fine-tune your ads (no matter their locations, the colors, the formats etc.), in order to get the maximizing performance of your Adsense ads. But how would you know how much does a particular ad unit earn per day?

By assigning a channel, you can closely monitor a particular ad, or a set of ads, and have the statistics of ads impressions, clicks and earnings. With these statistics, you can easily know which ads perform well, and should be kept. On the other hand, if an ad is underperformed (such as no clicks, low earnings etc.), then you need to make a change to it, or even eliminate it.

So, what is a URL channel? It is a channel that monitors all the ads units displaying under the URL you have provided. For example, if you choose the top domain "www.DaGsenseCodes.com" as the URL of a URL channel, then the report of which will show the statistics about all ads units under the top domain of www.hkessay.com and also all its subdomains. On the other hand, if you choose a sub-domain "http://dagsensecodes.com/2006/12/what-is-adsense-channel.html" as the URL, then only the ads within the subdomains will be included in the report. However, personally, I do not think URL channel is useful. At least, it is less useful than custom channel.

What is a custom channel? A custom channel is assigned to a particular ad unit when you generate the Adsense HTML code. It can monitor that particular ad and show the statistics of its performance, impressions, clicks and earning. Since it is so specific, it is more popular and useful.

Also, one minor point to note, you can have up to 200 AdSense channels. You can use channels to gain the insight you need to optimize your site's performance. It's easy to add, deactivate, or rename your channels, and customized reports are simple to generate. Hope you find this post useful.

Thanks for the site but do you know how hard white on black is to read?

It is extremely hard on the eyes, at least mine. I can barely read some of the lines, especially offwhite on black.

Micheal,

Thank you very much for your precious comment. Actually, I tried differnt templates to suit in the blog. I finally figured out that black template is the most suitable one for this blog.

If there are more similar comments, I will make a serious consideration on changing the color.

how much are u making from your site

i make only $30 a day

but i set my ads to just text ads
but its still showing crappy banner
ads anyway to sort this....great site

oh and can adsence memeber click on other peoples ads?

Wow..great to hear that you earn $30 a day. For this site, it only generates about $10 a day. That is the reason why you need to have several sites to get a higher earnings.

If you select text ads to be shown, there would be no chance for the banner ads to be shown. That is really weird in your situation.

Adseners are not permitted to click on their own ads. But of course, adsensers can click on other ads with a good intension.

thank you very much in leaving a comment here. Hope you can kindly leave a link to my blog in your site.

I 100% agree with MichaelShedlock's comments. Yes it is very hard to read the white on black background. It really is a toll on eyes. after reading one quarter of the page ur eyes get dried and u have to close ur eyes for couple of minutes to read again. So I think u should seriously consider to change the color combination.

My url channel report is shown as no data available, always. What to do?

It is quite a difficult questions since I do not know much about your site. The only suggestion is to make sure the url you have provided does have Adsense Ads inside.

Thanks for the info..sorry if this question is answered somewhere else, but in regards to channels, is there a way to identify a certain chunk of a URL and return report data? I.E. in this example, I'd like a channel that returns all url's with "id=200" in it. Any wildcards that can be placed on either side to help identify?

Great advice on using custom channels. I'm going to have to give it a try.

One issue I have is that I am driving my site from a SQL database and I am pretty sure that the ads from search results don't necessarily reflect the content of those results.

Do I need to do anything special to have adsense see the results on the search results
