Google-friendly URL Structure

The URL structure of your web site has a considerable impact on your ranking in the search results. In this article I will give you a few SEO tips to help you improve the readability of your URLs.

First, you should consider having URLs that are easy to read and write by humans, make them descriptive yet keep them short. They should be easy to read, easy to type and the URL should represent the site’s structure. It would be best if people can simply cut off the URL. As an example: yourblog.com/seo/web-design.php can be cut off to yourblog.com/seo, giving people an overview of all of the article in the seo category. Also, try using punctuation in your URLs, innovative-design.html instead of innovativedesign.html. As an example you can take a look at this web site from a Webdesign Bureau which has done a nice job.

Search engines don’t like dynamic and overly complex URLs with a lot of parameters, so try and avoid them. If you have dynamic URLs, you should use a URL rewrite engine that changes it into a static looking URL. What this engine does is, it intercepts a web request and automatically redirects it to a search engine friendly URL. A famous tool is Apache’s mod rewrite module, but you also have URL rewrite tools if you are for instance using ASP.
